In close collaboration between artisans and cultural institutions, Bornholm is now launching an initiative entitled Maker's Island Bornholm. The goal is to increase interest in Bornholm's crafts internationally. The move comes as a result of Bornholm being recognized as the first island in the world - and the first place in Europe - in 2017 as World Craft Region. The title was awarded to Bornholm by the World Craft Council (WCC), the largest international arts and crafts organization in the world. Maker's Island Bornholm represents both the artisans, museums and biennials, history, tourism, business, employment and education, a solid foundation for jointly developing the island's small and large artisans, attractions and institutions - and thus exploiting the clear growth potential and synergy. Behind Maker's Island Bornholm stands the Arts & Crafts Association Bornholm, Bornholm Art Museum, Grønbechs Gård, Hjorths Fabrik, Art Academy's School of Design in Nexø, Destination Bornholm, Center for Regional and Tourism Development and Business Center Bornholm. The cooperation is led by the regional municipality.
