Traces I is a group of ceramic objects made in porcelain and minerals found on Vang granite quarry on Bornholm-Denmark. The traces of minerals left on the porcelain forms and those of the maker’s hands, not only provide a sense of belonging and identity; they add a distinctive ceramic expression to the hand-thrown forms.
“The artwork is the beginning of an ongoing dialogue between the materials and their surroundings. Going on site to find materials, creates a bond with the environment. Getting familiar with a place and turning it into a home, whether in Colombia, England or Bornholm, allows me to take ownership of the dialogue with the geographic area.
The porcelain vessel were made for a site-specific installation that acted as an invitation to explore the remains of Vang quarry. And as a way of giving something back to the place that has welcomed me by sharing its culture and history. A place that is now very close to my heart, the beautiful island of Bornholm”
The project was conceived at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts on Bornholm as part of a course called Scale, Space and Body. Jessica was able to complete this installation thanks to a collaboration with Hjorths Keramik Museum where she was an artist in residency for the summer of 2020.
